The area of Liver Diseases encompasses a range of acute and chronic liver diseases and conditions, including:

The body's largest organ (except for the skin), the liver performs a number of vital functions, including metabolizing food and drugs, removing toxins from the bloodstream, storing vitamins and minerals, producing proteins that help the blood to clot, and producing bile which helps digest food and nutrients.

Because the liver plays such an important role in many of the body's key functions, damage to the liver which can result from a number of conditions requires expert medical care. NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital has one of the nation's largest, most experienced teams of experts in liver diseases. Our Center for Liver Disease and Transplantation (CLDT) treats adults and children with liver disease using the most up-to-date medical, surgical, and radiologic techniques, some of which were developed here. Our interdisciplinary team of experts in hepatology, infectious diseases, gastroenterology, hepatobiliary surgery, interventional radiology, and pathology work closely to deliver individualized treatment and the highest quality of care to each patient.

As physicians at a major academic medical center affiliated with two Ivy League medical schools – Weill Cornell Medical College and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons – NewYork-Presbyterian doctors also work as researchers developing innovative therapies to diagnosis and treat liver diseases. These include a range of minimally invasive surgical, diagnostic, and radiation treatments which are used whenever possible and which have been demonstrated to give patients faster recovery times, fewer complications, less scarring, and excellent outcomes.
